I wasn’t more than ten years old. A bed of bearded iris grew in front of our house. In spring, the gravid buds were close to birthing their winter secrets. Green sheaths whispered their imminent unfurling into purple velvet and white satin to be accompanied by the faint, always surprising scent of root beer.
